Hiking Stories – Introduction

“Me thinks that the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow.” – Henry David Thoreau

Big Creek Upper Loop – Mason County, Washington

Hiking my very first trail seems like a distant memory.  Hell, I honestly cannot remember which path was the first.  It may have been in Red Mountain’s Redding Trail in Birmingham or Oak Mountain’s Jekyll n’ Hide Trail in Shelby County.  Evidently, I liked my first experience in hiking.  I have continued trekking along verdant routes since the six years I left Birmingham.  I was especially lucky in finding and marrying Larry, who shares my gusto for racking up hiking miles.

I may be foggy on the very first trail that unleashed my passion for forested footpaths, I do know for sure being outdoors – specifically hiking with Larry, Zeke and Coco – ranks high among the most pleasurable of human experiences.  I have written about my love for hiking and being outdoors in different areas of my website, yet not in great enough detail that aligns with the level of interest I have in them both.  With that, I finally decided to dedicate a blog series about my – and now our – beloved hobby.  Hiking Stories is a blog series that will detail the happenings of our hiking experiences – good, bad, or indifferent.

If I were to count, Larry and I have hiked trails in 11 states – Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.  To date, we have hiked the most trails in Georgia, followed by Virginia, and then Washington. The best trails from a natural beauty perspective, hands down are located in the Evergreen State.

Fellow hikers at all levels of expertise and outdoors enthusiasts from all walks of life inspire Larry and I to be more adventurous in our hiking.  We seek trails that challenge us physically, those that richly reward our senses. None of Big Pharma’s blockbuster drugs has anything on our endocrine systems’ response to a great hiking trip.  We have chosen to be deliberate in our selection of hiking expeditions – making sure we take our time and appreciate the nuanced experiences unique to each path we traverse. Along with trials to hike in more states – even Alaska – we will in the foreseeable future set our sights on hiking excursions around the world!
